Between I#I Be-twined Inbal Ann Hershtig
About this activity.
Kunstprojecten Noorderstation (KPNST) reopens with the project Between I#I Be-twined by engaged visual artist Inbal Ann Hershtig. This participatory weaving project is active from May 20 to July 20, 2024 with the opening on Saturday May 25 at 3 p.m.
The former stairwell of Station Groningen Noord is transformed into a space of shared creation and a 6-meter long loom. Groningers can bring material, and join the open weaving sessions, workshops and walks for free. As an exhibition it can be seen through the windows 24/7 and during opening hours.
Inbal Ann Hershtig lives in Selwerd, and noticed the history of the seperated neighborhoods on maps. Station Groningen Noord was built in 1884. Until the viaduct in 1974 only a small footbridge over the tracks connected residents from the north of the city and the centre. Still today the impact of this social-geographical seperation is here in Groningen. This inspired Hershtig to develop the walk-in weaving project Between I#I Be-twined.
For two months KPNST (ZO) will be a platform for gathering, sharing, and connecting with the local environment through making experiences. Especially residents from the surrounding areas are invited by Inbal Ann Hershtig to donate material and participate in open weaving sessions, thematic workshops and guided walks*. The tactile nonverbal experience will be shared; knowledge about connecting to our environment will be activated. This also results in a large-scale woven piece of intwined material from both sides of the station.
Inbal Ann Hershtig graduated in 2020 at the Frank Mohr Institute, and lives and works in Groningen. Hershtig's performative, participatory and engaged works derive from a strong personal motivation to connect with her own surroundings. She explores artistic counter actions to our material culture of the new, fast and disposable through handcrafts, centered by her work as a Contemporary Hunter Gatherer.
Literally, Hershtig started to gather materials in her house and on the streets. Where others might have seen waste, she found and foraged her raw material, and thrived with the enormous potential of this new given. She started to share this appreciation by inviting people to collect materials and join her in the weaving craft.
Her field of research is the nearby environment and the human-landscape entanglements in a broader sence. Prominent in Hershtig's meticulously performed works of art is her focus on interaction with participants and environment, the importance of tangibility in crafts, and thorough research. Earlier projects where amongst others in Tuinen Mien Ruys (2023, Dedemsvaart), Stroomopwaarts (2022, Vlechtmuseum Noordwolde), Bierumer School (2021, Bierum), and Shaky Grounds Festival (2018, Groningen).
