About this activity.

Bert Welmers – cityscapes and harbours

Bert Welmers (Papendrecht 1946) spent his youth in Zwolle.
He has been drawing and painting since his early childhood. There are still beautiful pencil drawings from his early years. Bert trained as an urban planner at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. He also took lessons in painting and watercolor at the Vrije Academie in The Hague. He has had a dual career. On the one hand he is a painter and on the other hand an urban planner. These are two professions that are an extension of each other. As a painter he is an observer of the spatial structure of city and country. As an urban designer, he shapes the city and the landscape.

In 2013, Bert Welmers exhibited for the first time at Peter ter Braak.
It is now time to show his development over the past 10 years.
Bert is a true plein-air painter. He paints figuratively with a fast, loose touch.
Spatial effect and especially the subtle light are characteristic of his paintings.
Bert usually paints landscapes or cityscapes, which he has a great preference for
painting small harbors with their intimacy and double light.

The exhibition in Groningen prompted Bert to create a series of Groningen cityscapes
to paint. He also shows a few Groningen landscapes and some harbor views from elsewhere.

Opening hours: Friday, Saturday & Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
