UMCG

About this activity.

Johan Dijkstra (1896-1978) was an exceptionally versatile artist: he was not only a painter, but also a graphic artist, book designer, stained glass artist and critic. In 1918, he founded the Groningen Art Circle De Ploeg with several other artists. In the early years of this association, many members regarded Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) as their great idol. Dijkstra will always remain fascinated by Van Gogh's life and work. Not only do we encounter traces of Van Gogh's characteristic working method in his paintings and drawings. Dijkstra also shows interest in the same subjects, such as harvest scenes and sunflowers. This exhibition shows the various ways in which Dijkstra gave shape and colour to his admiration for Van Gogh. The Johan Dijkstra Foundation has managed the entire artistic legacy of this Groningen artist since his death in 1978. All works in this exhibition at the UMCG come from the Foundation's collection. This exhibition is one of a series of activities by the art society Thomassen à Thuessink.
