Annie Vriezen - textile art
About this activity.
Textile artist Annie Vriezen lived and worked at the Allersmaborg in Ezinge from the 1960s to 2000s. She exhibited her woven tapestries, batik and applications internationally and her work was popular in Groningen; it could be seen in churches, government buildings and in private collections. For years, Annie’s imagination shaped the public space in Groningen. Art historian Lili Labouchere praised 'the use of color, the tranquility and the search for the essential that is expressed in the work'. Vriezen followed her own path, inspired by the Groningen landscape and life on the Allersmaborg.
In 2024, Annie Vriezen will celebrate her 90th birthday. A moment to reflect and celebrate her contribution to the textile arts. The exhibition also looks ahead. Even today, textile art is part of the public space. In 2022, Aleksandra Gaca designed the wall covering for the new council chamber of the city hall in Groningen. A preparatory panel of her 36-panel 'Woven Landscape' can be seen in the exhibition. In Vriezen and Gaca the past and present come together. A Dutch woman who learned to weave in Poland and a Polish woman who learned to weave in the Netherlands, both inspired by the Groningen landscape and the endless possibilities of textile art.
