An ocean of thoughts - The philosophers of Eveline van Duyl

About this activity.

In Pictua’s large hall upstairs you can now see sculptures of 15 philosophers. Eveline van Duyl looked for shape, facial expression, materials, the ones that fitted the most with her interpretation of the character and the way of thinking. There is a variety of materials: from roofing, mother of pearl, skeins of yarn and scouring pads.

Van Duyl about her sculptures: “The idea of living your life thinking, being able to thinh really thoroughly, impresses me deeply. I want these people, because that’s who they are, to represent, not as a demigod, but as a living creature, with vulnerabilities and thoughts, with frustrations.
A large part of the statues are female philosophers. Van Duyl: “Women have a different focus than men. Through female philosophers the thought experiment in my eyes gets a huge boost, and new insights occur on the horizon. Next to the portraits of the philosophers there is the work 'The Deep'. It is a big tapestry of the sea with a world of fish made of wood, birds and baby’s .

Pictura.

Het Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura in Groningen werd opgericht in 1832 met als doel: 'de beeldende kunst en de nijverheidskunst in de ruimste zin van het woord aan te moedigen en te bevorderen.' Pictura is gehuisvest in een mooi, monumentaal pand aan het Martinikerkhof in Groningen. In de sfeervolle zalen exposeren professionele kunstenaars van uiteenlopende richtingen en disciplines, maar de hoofdmoot is figuratief.
