‘Amazonic Artistamps’ by Ruggero Maggi

From 1 to 31 October 2024, Ruggero Maggi, an Italian artist, will be exhibiting a mail art artistamp work ‘Amazonic Artistamps’ in the window gallery ‘De Prachtvink’ at the Vinkhuizen shopping centre, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
‘Amazonic Artistamps’ is a mail art work measuring 21 x 29.7 cm, originally from 1979. The exhibited work is a recent reissue. In the late 1970s, Maggi became interested in the Amazon region, where things were already not going well at the time. Large-scale deforestation was (and is) taking place, biodiversity is declining and the original inhabitants are being driven from their homes. In a major art project, the Italian artist drew attention to the situation in South America. Part of the project was a series of art stamps, ‘artistamps’. In the early years of mail art, artists investigated whether it was possible to send their mail art with self-made stamps. This was often successful. In the 21st century, this is no longer possible due to automation. Nevertheless, artists still make artistamps. The fake stamps are charming because of their small size and the graphic artworks that are executed on a square inch. Maggi re-released his Amazonic series because of a major retrospective exhibition of his work in Pavia.
Ruggero Maggi (1950, Turin) discovered visual poetry in 1973. From 1975 onwards, he took the first steps in international mail art and has since become one of the world's leading mail art artists. He has organized many projects himself and is regularly a guest curator. His subjects range from social involvement, such as projects about Tibet, to the pure celebration of art, such as a project about Michelangelo at work in 2008. Maggi's work is included in various museum collections in Europe and America. Maggi currently lives and works in Milan.
The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but then 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is lit until 23:00.
